Funerals are considered a time to remember the life and legacy of a person. Over the centuries there have been many famous funerals. This is a list of some of the most famous:

  • Michael Jackson (1958-2009) - The shocking and unexpected death of The King of Pop left many fans heartbroken. An estimated 1.6 million people entered a lottery to win one of 17,500 tickets to the memorial service that was held at L.A.'s Staple Center. Considered one of the largest celebrity funeral services in history.
  • George Herman “Babe” Ruth (1895-1948) – The man of many nicknames is one of the most famous athletes of all time. His funeral gained the attention of about 75,000 fans to Yankee Stadium and another 75,000 to St. Patrick's Cathedral. His pallbearers were a few other famous faces of the era including Joe DiMaggio, heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey and New York Governor Thomas Dewey.
  • Princess Diana (1961-1997) – Few deaths stuck the world as shockingly as the death of the Princess of Wales. The tragic and accidental death left the world a gasp. When her funeral took place on Sept 6th 1997, over one million people viewed her coffin as it traveled 4 miles. 2.5 billion people viewed the service on their televisions.
  • Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005) – The journalist and author wasn't America's biggest celebrity, but his life was and his funeral was even bigger. The ESPN reporter died of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. In a private ceremony Thompson's ashes were fired from a cannon that was placed atop a 153-foot tower. The tower was modeled after his famous Gonzo fist image of a double thumbed hand holding a peyote button. This was Thompson's last wish and it was fulfilled and funded by actor and friend Johnny Depp.
