The Lighter Sides of Coffins

Coffins are a sign of final resting. Most traditional examples are hardwood with metal accents, giving a very refined look. Some people have wanted to shy away from these ideals and instead have chosen more personalized caskets. One railway enthusiast in England commissioned a coffin that resembles a train's passenger car. In Ghana, it is a tradition to include fun and colors that are often based on local culture. If you're a big enough Star Trek fan, perhaps your choice would be a Star Trek themed casket inspired by the famous Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. A company named “Cruisin Casket” has designed car-shaped coffins that feature functioning wheels. These can be designed for any model car you desire. A traditional coffin manufacturer, Vic Fearn & Company, has recently started to manufacturer custom caskets. They can create anything you can think of from a cellphone, to a purse, even a guitar. There is even a coffin available for the members of the Kiss Army. If you prefer the more expensive things in life then you can opt for a 14-karat solid gold coffin.
These coffins offer people more options about their passing, and the way in which they want to leave the world. The price and availability of these also vary greatly. If you have any questions about funeral services in NJ call Bergen Funeral Service today, and we will give you our full attention in this difficult time.

Islamic Funeral Traditions

Bangladesh citizens are primarily followers of Islam (90% Muslim), and Hinduism (8.2%). The development of Islam in Bangladesh developed independently from the dominant Islam trends in India. The preservation of pre-Islamic customs from Buddhism and Hinduism are wheat make commitment to Islam unique in Bangladesh. It is a common Muslim belief that good deeds done will yield entry into Paradise on the Day of Judgment. When someone of Islamic faith dies there are preparations and ceremonies that are taken.
  • According to Islamic law, the deceased's body should be buried as soon as possible. This means that funeral preparations and planning should start immediately. If a person would like their family member to be buried in their homeland, companies do offer funeral shipping to Bangladesh.
  • Organ donation is generally accepted in the Muslim faith, because it follows the teachings of the Qur'an, “Whosoever saves the life of one person it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind”.
  • Embalming and cosmetology are not permitted in the Islamic faith, but some state and federal laws require it. Cremation is forbidden in the Muslim faith
  • The post-funeral mourning period lasts 40 days, but may be shorter depending on the family's degree of religiousness. After the funeral and burial, the immediate family gathers and receives visitors.

When a culture and religion have such esteem for their traditions, especially in the case of burial, it is important to find a funeral company that treats with the matter with the same respect. Bergen Funeral Services is well versed in all religious burial ceremonies, and perform each service with the same amount of dignified respect.

African Burial Customs

When a loved one passes away far from home, this is an additional worry that is the last thing that needs to be on the minds of family and friends of the deceased. To help return the departed back home, Bergen Funeral Service Inc. provides international funeral shipping all over the globe, including to Africa.

Depending on the region the person is from, there are a variety of customs that are followed by Africans when a person passes away. According to the Encyclopedia of Death and Dying, the African burial rites include sending away the departed with two pleas: the first asks the deceased not to bring trouble to those who are still living, and the second asks the deceased to strengthening life on earth and those who favor it.

When it comes to burial services, there are many traditions that are involved, but one of the most common concepts in Africa includes that funeral and burial rites exist to mourn the dead, but also to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Other traditions vary from community to community. In some communities, family members stand on one side of the grave, while everyone else in attendance at the funeral stands on the other side. Other communities do not allow children and unmarried adults to attend funerals. In southern Africa, there is a time of strict mourning that must continue one week after the funeral.

No matter where a person is from in Africa, funerals involve entire communities. Everyone shares the grief after a person passes away.

Burial services are geared toward helping the deceased make a smooth transition from the earthly world to the afterlife. To help with this transition, sometimes personal items will be buried with the deceased.

At Bergen Funeral Service Inc., our funeral professionals want to help loved ones who have passed away return back to their families and homes. If you need help bringing the deceased back to Africa, contact our professionals. Our professionals are knowledgeable about the many different customs and traditions of a variety of cultures for funeral shipping in Africa.

Funeral Customs of Guyana

Guyanese culture is rich with folklore and traditional beliefs about life and death. People who are familiar with or from this nation are very much aware of the importance and reverence that the dead hold in this society, and when someone passes away far from home it is commonplace for the family to request the services of an international funeral shipping company to provide funeral shipping to Guyana that is efficient, quick and respectful. Here are some of the customs of Guyana with regards to the dead.
  • All references to the dead are prefaced with the words “God rest the dead in the living and the looking.”
  • The body of the deceased is usually washed and dressed by the family.
  • There is a gathering similar to a wake for mourning and saying farewell.
  • Nine days after the wake, there is a “nine night,” which is held in memory of the deceased.
  • Mirrors in the home are covered, for fear of seeing the deceased.
  • Homes are swept out in order to usher the spirit of the dead out and urge him or her not to take any family members with him or her.
  • Much of the religious customs follow Christian practices.

When you need to bring a departed family member home to Guyana, contact the experts at Bergen Funeral Service Inc. We are experienced with the burial traditions of many cultures and can accommodate anything you need during this emotional time.

Funeral Facts and Tips

A funeral is not the kind of event that we must plan frequently or regularly, but we all must be prepared for the eventuality that we will be called upon to oversee and plan the passing of a loved one. The experts at Bergen Funeral Service Inc can help you with this stressful and emotional process so that you can say goodbye in a dignified manner that meets with the wishes of the departed.

Here are some things you should know about funerals:
  • Disposition arrangements are a term used to describe the funeral wishes of a person. A person can make these arrangements for himself or herself, have a legally appointed trustee fulfill them, or a next of kin.
  • A law protects a person’s choices as long as it meets with the requirements of being easily understood and clearly defined and arrangements of the final services.
  • The law does not require embalming, however there are certain standards that non-embalming services must meet.
  • The law does not require the purchase of a casket before a cremation.
  • You are not required to have the body prepared in a funeral home, however home funeral care must meet specific guidelines. Talk to one of our experts if you are interested in this option.
  • A funeral shipping service that is a “known shipper” has connections that can expedite the process of long distance body transportation.

For more information about having everything ready for a funeral, call Bergen Funeral Service Inc today and speak with an expert who can give you insights and assistance about what is required from you.

What type of funeral are you having – is there going to be a cremation, an embalming, an open or closed casket?

What material is the casket going to be made out of – wood, metal, will there be a cremation or something else?

Is the ceremony open to friends and family or closed to just a specific few.

What hours and how many times will there be a viewing?

Compose an obituary – go over hobbies, interests and achievements of the deceased in a way that truly reflects how the individual lived.

Make arrangements for the burial – a graveside service with transportation or an intimate cremation both need to be planned, organized and then carried out.

Hindu Funeral Home Queens

It is always difficult to make funeral arrangements when a loved one passes. If you are looking for for a Hindu funeral home in Queens, Bergen Funeral Service Inc is a family owned and operated non-denominational funeral home that can perform Hindu funeral services. Our funeral directors are available 24 hours a day and can help ease you through any difficulties.

Since Hindus do not believe in resurrection, the body is rapidly cremated, usually with a day of passing. The ashes are collected and then scattered on a place that was important to the deceased after four days.

At a Hindu funeral, mourners wear casual white clothing. Prayers are said and hymns are sung. There will be an open casket, and the body will be covered with many flowers. It is important to send them prior to the ceremony. It is inappropriate to bring them to the funeral. The deceased’s life will be celebrated with a feast twelve or thirteen days after the funeral.

If you would like more information on our Queens Hindu funeral home, contact Bergen Funeral Service Inc.

Celebrity Funerals

Funerals are considered a time to remember the life and legacy of a person. Over the centuries there have been many famous funerals. This is a list of some of the most famous:

  • Michael Jackson (1958-2009) - The shocking and unexpected death of The King of Pop left many fans heartbroken. An estimated 1.6 million people entered a lottery to win one of 17,500 tickets to the memorial service that was held at L.A.'s Staple Center. Considered one of the largest celebrity funeral services in history.
  • George Herman “Babe” Ruth (1895-1948) – The man of many nicknames is one of the most famous athletes of all time. His funeral gained the attention of about 75,000 fans to Yankee Stadium and another 75,000 to St. Patrick's Cathedral. His pallbearers were a few other famous faces of the era including Joe DiMaggio, heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey and New York Governor Thomas Dewey.
  • Princess Diana (1961-1997) – Few deaths stuck the world as shockingly as the death of the Princess of Wales. The tragic and accidental death left the world a gasp. When her funeral took place on Sept 6th 1997, over one million people viewed her coffin as it traveled 4 miles. 2.5 billion people viewed the service on their televisions.
  • Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005) – The journalist and author wasn't America's biggest celebrity, but his life was and his funeral was even bigger. The ESPN reporter died of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. In a private ceremony Thompson's ashes were fired from a cannon that was placed atop a 153-foot tower. The tower was modeled after his famous Gonzo fist image of a double thumbed hand holding a peyote button. This was Thompson's last wish and it was fulfilled and funded by actor and friend Johnny Depp.

Day of the Dead

October 31st marks the start of Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead), the Mexican holiday for remembering friends and family that have passed away. The celebration takes place on October 31st through November 2nd, following the Christian triduum of All Hallows' Eve, All Saints' Day, and All Saints' Day. The celebration includes building private altars called ofrendas honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting the graves with these gifts. They also bring the possessions of the deceased. Similar observances occur in European, Asian and African cultures.
The celebration in Mexico can be traced back to a pre-Columbian past. The rituals celebrated the deaths of ancestors by these civilizations and skulls were often seen as signs of death and rebirth. The service is mostly for the prayer and remembrance of the departed family members. Instead of a time for mourning, this is a celebration of praise for the lives they lived.
Bergen Funeral Services knows and understands how different cultures observe the death of loved ones. Bergen Funeral Services is a full-service, non-denominational funeral home in Queens. We assure the family of the deceased that the service is carried out with the utmost respect and care.

Guidelines for Domestic Funeral Shipping

The world is a lot smaller than it once was, and the need for funeral shipping is something that is becoming more and more relevant for families who live far apart. Domestic funeral shipping is a normal part of society these days, but there are still many people with questions about what this service is, what you need to do and what is legally required to ship a deceased loved one across state lines. The experts at Bergen Funeral Service Inc have outlined some important guidelines that can assist you as you learn more about what domestic funeral shipping is.

Get all of your documentation together. Domestic funeral shipping usually requires the death certificate, burial/transit documents, a letter avowing non-contagious disease, embalmers affidavit, and the letter from the first funeral home stating that only human remains are inside the casket. If you come to a funeral home for help with these items, we can also provide assistance with getting this ready.

Find a funeral home in the known-shipper program. Intended to save customers time and money, the known-shipper program is a partnership between the TSA and certain funeral homes who are certified to screen remains off-site of the airport and skip many of the security hold-ups on the day of shipping. Similarly, these funeral homes have relationships with airlines to help get the right flight at the right time.

These are only a few of the ins-and-outs of domestic funeral shipping that can be very useful for anyone who is not sure how to get their loved one home for their final resting place. If you have questions, speak to one of the experts at Bergen Funeral Inc and we will be happy to assist you.

Many different religions have different stances on cremation. Here are some of the different traditions involving cremation:

Buddhism requires that bodies be cremated.

Hinduism, like Buddhism, require cremation with a few exceptions. Monks and children under five are all buried.

Christian religion once prohibited cremation, but has changed their stance in the 1960s. Although burial is preferred in Christian dogma, cremation is acceptable. There are however still a few orthodox sects that do not allow cremation.

Post Cremation Suggestions

There are more options of what you are able to do when you choose cremation over traditional burial. After a cremation service, your loved ones remains are given to you and your family. From there it is up to your family what you would like to do with the remains.

Here are some suggestions you can do with the cremated remains:

  • Scatter on Land: There are many places that may be special to you and your family. This is an option if you want, but there may be some legal issues depending on where you choose.
  • Scatter at Sea: The only cost of this send-off is having a boat take you three miles off the coast. It is a perfect solution for someone who loved the sea. If this is your choice, make sure to use a biodegradable container (paper, cardboard, etc) because the wind could blow the remains back.
  • Cemetery Burial: If you prefer a more traditional approach, many cemeteries do offer smaller burial sites for cremated remains. These plots can still be costly.
  • Keeping the Urn: Your loved one's remains can be enshrined in an elegant ornate urn set in a special spot.

When considering cremation, it is important that you deal with a company that knows this service needs to be done with dignity and respect. Bergen Funeral Service INC. has been a premier cremation service in Brooklyn for years, offering our customers nothing but the best.

If you have any questions about any of our cremation services in Brooklyn, do not hesitate to call Bergen Funeral Service INC. today.

Bergen Funeral Service Inc is a leading funeral home in Queens with many years of experience helping people get through the difficult process of preparing a loved one for burial. This is not the sort of thing people go through very often, and we understand at first the challenges of making arrangements can be overwhelming – so the funeral experts at Bergen Funeral Home in Queens have published some things that you need to do after someone passes away:

  • All bank accounts in the name of the deceased will be frozen, so if you need money to live off in the meantime it is advised that you make a withdrawal
  • If the person was living away from home in an assisted living facility or something similar, you must gather their possessions so that you do not need to deal with substantial charges.
  • You need to prepare yourself for the funeral mentally and emotionally. If you are expected to give a eulogy make sure you practice your speech many times until you are comfortable with it in front of the people in attendance. Be ready to shake hands and accept condolences from the assembly.

Every situation is different, so Bergen Funeral Home in Queens is always ready to give advice and help you as you try to overcome such a taxing and draining event. If you have questions or would like to speak with a funeral expert, call us today at 1-800-262-7901.
